This is a real heartstopper. Imagine a school of rampaging kingish smashing bait on the surface. You cast a surface stickbait in front of the fish and a marauding pack peels away and chases down your lure. The hookup and fight is all visual as you're dragged around the boat trying to maintain some king of control. The skipper gets hold of the fish and the fight's over. You're exhausted, happy. A couple of quick pics and the fish is released as the skipper says it's time to find a big one.......apparently 12kg fish are still on the small side here.
Our Tag-Along kingfish trip is hosted by Extreme Sportfishing's Mark Armistead out of the seaside town of Tauranga. Situated a 3 hour drive South East of Auckland on NZs North Island. This is a part of the world where monster kingfish are found. On our 2012 trip we landed fish to 18kg but Mark had notched up fish to 37kg that season.
While the aim of the trip is to cast stickbaits at surface feeding fish we also drop jigs to the bottom to maximise our time on the water. This is a great way to add extra fish to the days count especially when the fish haven't pushed up to the surface.
You will be responsible for your booking your own flights but we will have a hire car to make the drive to tauranga and also to get you back to the airport at the end of the trip.
Sebel - Trinity Wharf. Walk out of your room, down to the restaurant for breakfast and then out onto the wharf where Mark awaits to take you offshore for the day. Depending on the group we stay in one of the Garden View Apartments but other arrangements can be made if you'd prefer your own room.
