For a lot of people it's the main event every year and your best chance to catch the largest tuna found anywhere in the country.
The mighty Southern Bluefin Tuna makes a migration along the western coast of Victoria each season. THis run generally starts in March and can see fish being caught right through until August. Each season fish over 100kg are weighed in at Portland and there have been a few real monsters with fish exceeding 150kg possible.
As with our Tag-Along-PPB Snapper trips we use Matthew Hunt's Fishing Services for all our Southern Bluefin Tuna trips. Matt is known for his prowess and higher than average capture rate on SBTs and we've been enjoying great trips with him for the past several years.
While all our past trips have been aboard Matt's 7.4m Clayton Galant M.V. Reggie the addition of a bigger Clayton Galant M.V Regina means we have a few more options this season.
While the fish do sometimes come in close to Portland it is most likely that long runs to reach the fish will be required.
We keep our SBT trips down to a maximum of 4 anglers.
Most outfits are running 15 or 24kg line to give you the best chance of landing that once in a lifetime fish when it comes along. We do however occasioanlly run specialised light tackle trips so speak to Chris Baty if you are interested in this aspect of the sport. Our standard lure spread consists of a few bibbed hardbodies in close with a variety of skirted lures further back.
We generally stay at the Whalers Rest just outside of Portland. You will be responsible for getting yourself to Portland although there may be the ability to car pool. Please allow 5 hours for the drive.
Matt supplies all the rods, reels and lures needed for a great day at sea but you will need to bring
